A Berkeley native, I first began
working in gardens during my teens,
teaching outdoor education and organic farming to children in the San Francisco Bay Area. My love of plants began much earlier though, while hiking, camping, and backpacking in the wonderful wild spaces that California has to offer. Developing simultaneously was my deep connection to the arts, leading me to complete a Bachelors Degree in Fine Art and Art History from the University of California at Santa Cruz. While in Santa Cruz, I participated in a number of community garden projects, horticulture classes, and a UCSC Arboretum Internship, focusing on native and rare plants. It was here that I began thinking about the possible intersection of my two passions: plants and art.
I returned to Berkeley after completing my undergraduate studies and began an apprenticeship with local landscape design company, Abbey Kletz Landscapes. Through hands-on training with a wonderful mentor, I have become familiar with the industry, as well as attuned to the specific needs and characteristics of Bay Area gardens. After completing my apprenticeship I became a full time Designer and Project Manager, until starting my own business after four years of working with Abbey Kletz.
My appreciation for the unique climate and culture of my hometown and surrounding areas has deepened through direct contact with the members of my community who have become my clients. Creating gardens as works of functional and growing art is central to my philosophy. I plan to pursue a Master’s Degree in Landscape Architecture and continue to regularly deepen my connection to the landscape through hiking, exploring, teaching, and gardening.
